Message What were they thinking? Remember the motorized ones? My 240SX has em.. and my mom's Maxima too. Surprised they still work.

I think there were quite a few cars that had the shoulder belt built into the door, so you still had to pull the lap belt over. I remember my sister's old VW Golf had the seat belts like that. Strange stuff...

I think the reason why they did that was because the government required either a driver's side airbag OR an automatic seatbelt. I'm guessing airbags were pretty expensive back then, so car manufacturers chose the 'automatic' route.
